Luanda

Luanda is the capital and largest city of Angola. The city is situated to the north of Porto Amboin off the South Atlantic Ocean. Luanda has an estimated population of 4.5 million people.

The city is one of the oldest capitals in Africa having been founded in 1575 and developing as a key port on the south-west African coast. The city is home to a number of foreign embassies and consulates and is the centre for trade and commerce for Angola. Major manufacturing industries here include; crude oil extraction and refinery, port activities (the Port of Luanda is the busiest in Angola and an important avenue for export and import commodities), food processing and clothing.

The city is also an important transport hub. Luanda is the starting point of a railway line which ventures from here inland. The use of the railway is however restricted due to damage caused during the civil war and the line is currently undergoing rehabilitation. From here a number of public bus services embark heading for other towns and cities. Luanda is also home to the Quatro de Feveiro International Airport. This is the key airport in the country and is served by a number of international airlines.

Luanda Airport:

The Quatro de Feveiro International Airport is the key airport in Angola. The airport is situated about 4 km from the Luanda City centre. Currently there are no taxis available at the airport and the only option for transport is via public means or car hire (Avis Car Rental has an office at the airport).

The airport is the main hub for Air Angola; the national airline of the country. This government owned airline flies regularly from here to a number of domestic and international destinations including; Brazzaville, Accra, Harare, Kinshasa, Johannesburg, Lisbon, London, Lusaka, Paris, Rio de Janeiro, Windhoek, Cabinda, Catumbela, Dundo, Huambo, Lubango, Malanje, Menongue, Soyo.
