Kigali is the Capital and largest City in Rwanda. Despite a large exodus of the City’s population due to conflict, the city has experienced steady population growth in recent years and is home to about 900,000 people.
About a century old, Kigali was established in 1907 as a German Outpost and became the capital of the Rwandan Republic when the Country attained its independence in 1962.
The City is the main commerce and trade centre for the country and is also home to a number of Rwanda’s manufacturing and processing industries.
Transport in Kigali:
Kigali is a major hub for transportation in Rwanda. From here, a number of bus services operate to routes around the Country and into neighboring Uganda and Burundi. Minibuses also exist and are a common means of transport especially within the city. Taxis are also available. Kigali is home to the Kigali International Airport, the key airport in the country.

Major hotels in the City include Des Mille Collines Hotel made famous for its depiction in the hit film “Hotel Rwanda”. Other Hotels in the City are the InterContinental Hotel Kigali and the Novotel Kigali Umubano.

With the resumption of regular scheduled flights to Kigali, there are a number of airlines that operated periodically to the city mostly from a number of destinations within Africa.
The City is served by the Kigali International Airport which is the main hub for local airline; Rwandair. The airport is situated approximately 12 km from the city centre and has one main terminal building. The Kigali Airport is the sole international airport in Rwanda. Transport from the airport consists mainly of taxi and public buses.
Other airlines operating flights to Kigali are; Kenya Airways, Air Burundi, South African Airways, Ethiopian Airlines, SN Brussels and Air Tanzania.
